Demo ride
The University of Tartu Autonomous Driving Lab is offering demo rides with a self-driving car. The operation area covers the whole Tartu, the car drives from bus stop to bus stop. The car is not completely driverless, the front seats are reserved for the safety driver and computer operator who ensure your safety at all times. The car can fit 2-3 people in the back seat. Click on the map on the right to open a large version of the Tartu bus lines map.
Reserve your demo rideHow it works
- At the designated time you will be sent a code to your phone. Log in to the traxi.ut.ee webapp with the code.
- Choose a starting point and destination, as in a regular ride-hailing app.
- The system chooses the nearest bus stops for pickup and dropoff. You can change both bus stops if needed.
- Click Order — the car starts moving towards the pickup point.
- You can observe the car route, its speed and what it is currently doing, e.g. waiting for a traffic light.
- Once the car arrives, confirm when you are in the car. The car drives to the dropoff.
- Confirm when you are out of the car and the car drives off.
What you can expect
The self-driving car can handle:
- Staying within its lane
- Following other cars
- Reacting to traffic lights
- Reacting to pedestrians on crosswalks
- Handling yielding on intersections
- Handling right-hand intersections
- Handling roundabouts
Current limitations
In some situations the safety driver takes over control:
- Pedestrians waiting to cross the street
- Buses leaving from a bus stop
- Roadworks or other blockages
